In California all children between the ages of 6 and 18 are required to attend public school unless they are exempted. If you want to pursue home education in California you must meet one of the options outlined below.

How to Homeschool in California

There are 4 options available to homeschool in California.

Option 1: Qualify as a Private Homeschool

Under ยง 48222, a homeschool could qualify as a private school by filing an annual private school affidavit also known as the PSA between October 1 and 15th of each school year. To get a full walk through in filling out the affidavit click here.

Option 2: Enroll in a PSP

You could enroll in a private school satellite program which will allow you to “homeschool” through a qualified private school as outlined in option 1. To find a PSP in your area click here.

Option 3: Hire a Private Tutor

You could hire a certified private tutor to instruct your child.

Option 4: Enroll in an Public School ISP program

You can enroll the child in a public school independent study program. Under this option, the child must abide by the rules and regulations of the public school.
